Lavender

Provence grows two main types of lavender: fine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia). Fine lavender, which is rarer and more precious, grows at high altitude and produces a superior quality essential oil. Lavandin, which is more robust and productive, is often used in consumer products.
Flowering: Lavender generally starts to flower at the end of June and reaches its peak in July. The fields are covered in purple flowers, creating postcard-worthy landscapes.
Breathtaking landscapes: Whether at the foot of Mont Ventoux, in the Baronnies Provençales, or around hilltop villages such as Gordes and Sault, the lavender fields offer exceptional panoramic views. The long rows of lavender, often bordered by cypress trees or old stone walls, are a sight not to be missed.
Distilleries and essential oils: The lavender harvest is followed by distillation to produce lavender essential oil, known for its many therapeutic virtues. Visit the local distilleries to discover the distillation process and taste lavender-based products such as essential oils, soaps and cosmetics.
